FOCUSING ON
THE DEATH PENALTY
On July 1, 2020, thirteen years after being wrongfully convicted and sentenced to death, Kareem Johnson was exonerated. Mr. Johnson is the 170th death-row prisoner exonerated in the U.S. since 1973. Mr. Johnson is the third prisoner from Philadelphia exonerated in the past 10 months
Mr. Johnson’s wrongful conviction and death sentence were the result of misconduct by the District Attorney and law enforcement, by false forensic evidence, and by ineffective legal representation in trial. Government witnesses testified that Mr. Johnson shot the victim at close range. He was convicted based on false testimony that located his DNA on a hat left at the crime scene.
Mr. Johnson maintained his innocence. Years later, appellate lawyers found the hat, tested it, and found nothing connecting Mr. Johnson with that hat. The hat was the only evidence that connected Mr. Johnson with the crime. Eventually, Mr. Johnson was exonerated and freed.
How could this go so wrong?
Our speakers are experts in the legal landscape that allows innocent defendants to be convicted. The webinar, on August 25th, is the fourth in our 6-part series and addresses the number of innocent prisoners on death row, and how they got there.
